About This Role
Overview
NSA's Mathematics Research Group conducts world‑class research to develop new techniques and technologies for Signals Intelligence and Cybersecurity missions and the broader Intelligence Community. We are seeking mathematicians to join our team, focusing on applications in quantum computing, post‑quantum cryptography, cryptanalysis, machine learning, statistics, network defense, forensics, and graph algorithms.
Responsibilities
• Conduct research and development in quantum computing or post‑quantum cryptography.
• Engage with NSA and US government efforts, identify important research problems, and produce actionable research results.
• Present a seminar talk on quantum computing research or development work.
• Participate in two structured interviews—one technical, one soft‑skills—to assess qualifications.
Qualifications
• Degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or related STEM field with at least 24 semester credit hours (or 36 credit hours on a quarter system) in advanced mathematics.
• Research and/or development experience (beyond basic coursework) in quantum computing or post‑quantum cryptography.
• Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills.
• Desire for continual learning and ability to work effectively independently and within teams.
• Proficiency in at least one of: C/C++, Rust, Python, SageMath, MAGMA.
• Demonstrated success in technical writing and communicating results to non‑technical audiences.

• Full Performance:
• Bachelor's + 3 years relevant experience
• Master's + 1 year relevant experience
• Doctoral + no experience
• Senior:
• Bachelor's + 6 years relevant experience
• Master's + 4 years relevant experience
• Doctoral + 2 years relevant experience
• Expert:
• Bachelor's + 9 years relevant experience
• Master's + 7 years relevant experience
• Doctoral + 5 years relevant experience
Additional Interests
• Knowledge of linear algebra, number theory, probability, statistics, analysis, graph theory, or other theoretical mathematics.
• Experience or interest in cryptomathematics, algorithm development, computer network security, vulnerability analysis.
