Your Role And Responsibilities
IBM Quantum is seeking candidates for a Materials R&D Engineer position at the T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in collaborative environments, pays close attention to detail, and is eager to contribute to the development of next generation quantum materials. You will collaborate with world class scientists and engineers and use cutting edge processing and characterization equipment to help define the future of quantum hardware.
Role
As Quantum Materials R&D Engineer, you will take a central role in the electroplating and fabrication processes that enable cutting edge quantum devices. Drawing on your technical background and the guidance of experienced chemists and engineers, you will develop and refine materials used in next generation superconducting qubit systems. Your work will include:
• Developing new materials and fabrication processes for quantum hardware: including novel electroplating baths and processes
• Preparing and processing samples
• Maintaining electroplating baths and laboratory equipment
• Characterizing materials using chemical and materials analytical characterization equipment as well as electrical measurements in dilution refrigerators
• Conducting root cause analyses to troubleshoot material and process issues
• Documenting procedures and results with formal documentation and present results to key stakeholders.
• Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across IBM Quantum
Required Technical And Professional Expertise
• Minimum of one year of experience in a wet chemistry laboratory (through coursework, research, internships, or professional roles)
• Ability to independently troubleshoot and solve complex problems.
• Ability to communicate and work with an interdisciplinary team of electrical engineers, fabrication engineers, and experimental physicists.
• Strong growth mindset
• Strong attention to detail
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Chemistry)
Preferred Technical And Professional Experience
• Hands on electroplating experience
• Cleanroom experience with familiarity in CMOS processes and materials
• Experience working with semiconductor fabrication tools
